Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation can enhance a woman’s figure by increasing both the fullness and projection of the breasts. Augmentation can improve breasts that are congenitally small, as well as correct asymmetric breasts, improving one’s self-confidence and self image. Augmentation can restore volume lost secondary to weight loss, pregnancy or menopause. The implants are inserted through minimal incisions under the breast or around the areola and are appropriately hidden and aesthetically pleasing. The patient’s individual preference and desires are important in deciding what size, shape and type of implant to use. Breast augmentation can be performed in conjunction with a mastopexy (breast lift) if a lift is deemed necessary by the surgeon.
Breast Lift/Mastopexy
A woman’s breasts change over time, losing their shape, firmness and lift. The breast tissue effectively “bottoms out” with loss of fullness in the top of the breast (superior), and increased volume at the bottom (inferior) with the nipple assuming an abnormally high position. These changes may be the result of the natural aging process or loss of skin elasticity from pregnancy, breast feeding or weight gain or loss. Heredity can also be a factor. Regardless of the cause, it is common for a woman to desire improved positioning/lift and breast shape.
In general, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue in order to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift, or mastopexy, can be performed without augmentation, reduction or any change in the original volume of the breast. In addition to the “sag”, the areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) may become enlarged and the nipple may begin to point downwards, a Mastopexy will improve this as well.
In consultation, the patient’s individual needs, issues and concerns are directly addressed and a surgical plan is developed accordingly.
